Set boundaries before you start
Only gamble if you meet the legal age in your location: at least 18, and higher where local rules require it. Decide what you can afford to lose after essential expenses, and set a time limit too. Avoid borrowing, playing while distressed or increasing stakes to recover a loss. A winning session does not make the next outcome more predictable.
Use account controls
Look for deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders and time-outs in the operator’s account settings. Read when reductions and increases take effect. If stopping feels difficult, use self-exclusion and ask the operator how it applies across its services. Do not open another account or use a different casino to get around an exclusion. Device-level blocking software can add another barrier.
Recognise when to step away
Warning signs include hiding gambling, missing bills, losing sleep, repeatedly extending a session or feeling compelled to win money back. You do not have to wait for a financial crisis to ask for help. Talk to someone you trust and put distance between yourself and payment access. A break is a valid decision at any point, including before a first deposit.
Find independent support
Gambling Therapy provides international online support and resources. In Great Britain, GamCare offers specialist support and GAMSTOP provides self-exclusion from participating online operators. In Canada, use the provincial support services linked by the Responsible Gambling Council. Availability and eligibility differ by region; use the service’s own website to find the appropriate route. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
